Google answers now instead of linking. What that means for a small business
More and more searches end with a written answer instead of ten blue links. If that answer does not mention you, you were not there — and unlike a lost ranking, no click and no report ever shows it happened.
What actually changed
Ask a question and you increasingly get a written answer at the top of the page: Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity. The links are still underneath. Far fewer people scroll to them.
The old fight was for a position in a list. The new one is for being named inside the answer.
Why this hits small business hardest
"Best barber near me" is exactly the kind of question these systems answer confidently. Three names get mentioned. For that person, everyone else does not exist.
And you never find out. There is no impression, no click, nothing in any report — just a customer who went somewhere else.
How an engine decides who to name
It reads what the web says about you and prefers what it can repeat with confidence: plain facts, in ordinary sentences, on pages that make clear who is speaking.
Marketing language works against you here. "Innovative solutions for your business" cannot be quoted. "Business-card website from €390, ready in a week" can.
What actually helps
Write your facts down in public: what you do, where, what it costs, how long it takes. Answer real questions on real pages. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere.
Structured data helps a machine read it, and being mentioned on other sites helps it trust what it read. None of this is different from good SEO — it is good SEO with the vagueness taken out.
What to do this month
Take the five questions customers ask you most often and answer each one on its own page, in plain language, with the numbers left in.
That is the whole method. It is also why this page exists.
